OUR MISSION
On September 1, 1983, Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare became the 31st Community MHMR center in Texas, serving Liberty, Walker, and Montgomery Counties. Tri-County began its first year with an executive director, program director, business director, administrative assistant, and eleven staff who had transferred from Rusk State Hospital. Only outpatient mental health counseling and psychiatric services were offered.
The service array expanded very quickly and by the end of fiscal year 1984, Tri-County MHMR Services was offering classes for people with alcohol dependence and provided diagnosis and evaluation services for people with developmental disabilities/mental retardation. That same year saw contracts for in-patient psychiatric services and crisis resolution services as well as a jobs contract for people with mental impairments through the Texas Department of Highways. The budget had grown to almost $1.5 million, and there were 46 employees.
Today, with a new name, Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare has grown to be a more than $23 million system with 387 full and part-time staff. The Center’s staff now includes board certified psychiatrists, physician’s assistants, advanced practice nurses, licensed professional counselors, licensed social workers, registered and licensed vocational nurses, mental health and intellectual and developmental disabilities professionals and paraprofessionals, and a highly competent administration staff. We are currently funded through contracts with the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, consumer fees, and grants from a variety of sources.
Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare offers a comprehensive array of services and supports provided to nearly 8000 individuals with mental illness and 850 persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities on an annual basis; an average of 3000 persons are in service at any one time. Services for individuals with mental illnesses include: Mental Health Screening, Admission and Referral Services, Crisis Hotline Services, Crisis Residential Services, Medication Services, Inpatient Services, Skills Training, Vocational Services, Residential Support Services and Housing, Counseling Services, Criminal Justice Services, and Substance Abuse Prevention. Services for individuals with developmental disabilities include: Mental Retardation Screening, Admission and Referral Services, Home and Community Based Services, Group Homes, Day Habilitation Services, Employment Services, State School Placement and Discharge Services, and Respite Services.
